PREPARE FOR MOTHERHOOD
THE YIN AND YANG OF BIRTH & MOTHERHOOD
The womb is a place of creative potency; it is, after all, the origin of life. But, it is also steeped in something enigmatic and unknowable. For many women, this dual nature of the womb – both life-giving and deeply mysterious – mirrors their experiences with birth and motherhood.
At first glance, these competing dynamics can seem to be in opposition to one another. But, in fact, the two ideas are deeply interconnected. The journey then becomes one of welcoming both the light and the dark: the joyous miracle along with the complex challenges.
MOTHERHOOD – A UNIQUE AND AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE
Motherhood is idealized and mythologized in all kinds of ways. But a woman’s experience of birth and motherhood is uniquely her own and rarely lives up to ideals of the “perfect birth” or “perfect mother.”
Further, it’s only by letting go of this idea of what birth and motherhood “should be like” that you allow yourself to truly and intimately connect with the uniqueness of the experience. What’s most precious then is not some idealized notion of perfection but rather your authentic embrace of the process from moment to moment.
THE MYRIAD CHALLENGES OF MOTHERHOOD
This process often includes challenging thoughts, emotions, and sensations. It’s not uncommon for an expecting mother to be dreading giving birth. You might distrust yourself, worried that you don’t know how to be a good mother and you’ll only screw things up. And then you feel guilty for having these mixed feelings. As a mother, you may also feel terrified of losing yourself – of having your self-image change so drastically that you no longer know who you are. It’s only natural to resist and/or resent this change of identity.
What’s important to understand is that these challenges are a natural part of the journey. You don’t have to be ashamed or afraid of them. Instead, you can welcome them into your heart with understanding, kindness, and compassion. As you explore these thoughts and feelings with mindfulness and gentle curiosity, you will begin to see the wisdom hidden within them.
THE SACRED DANCE OF HEALING & TRANSFORMATION
Birth and motherhood provide a precious opportunity for deep healing and transformation. Old wounds frequently come to the surface through the life-changing intensity of the birthing experience. This offers a unique opportunity to become aware of and mend your own buried traumas.
In addition to healing the wounds of your “inner child”, you may also uncover hidden generational trauma. These are the old belief systems and habits passed down from your ancestors that you follow despite no longer being in your best interests.
Frequently, it’s necessary for you to grow as your baby grows – teaching yourself how to mother along the way. Most of us don’t live in villages where elders instruct us in the practical art of motherhood. The good news is that such wisdom still exists within you! That innate knowledge is there to access and skillfully apply to your life.
