In the 1970s, anthropologist Dana Raphael introduced the term “matrescence” to describe the profound journey women undergo as they transition into motherhood. This term, mirroring the tumultuous changes of adolescence, captures the extensive physical, emotional, psychological, and social adjustments that accompany the advent of a new life.
Motherhood is a deep commitment to nurturing and guiding the lives for which we are responsible. It starts with the profound bond formed from the earliest moments of conception, a time when our choices begin to shape not just our future but also that of our children. In a world of uncertainty and challenges, it’s all too easy to feel burdened and to relinquish our responsibility and power. Yet, recognizing the significant impact we have as mothers is essential—an impact that has the potential to profoundly influence future generations.
To be a mother is to experience growth, challenges, and joy, often all at once and within a single moment. The journey of motherhood encompasses ups and downs, moments of confusion, as well as profound love and wisdom. As mothers, we experience our weaknesses and strengths simultaneously, without any veils or disguises. To love so deeply, to desire to protect so fiercely, and to ultimately realize that the lives of our children are not entirely within our control – this is the very essence of yoga. It calls us to give ourselves to something greater, to act without attachment to the results, and to surrender the fruits of our labor to a higher understanding.
