Presence

SEPTEMBER 2022

there is nothing wiser
nothing saner
nothing more precious and lucid
than your quiet awareness
resting
in this moment.

WHAT IF WE LIVED EACH MOMENT AS IF IT WERE OUR LAST?

Not holding on to things, in full release and acceptance, forgiven and forgiving, acknowledging the grand grace of love everywhere, in communion with the mystery that is a part of every passing inhale and the experience of completion that is at the root of every exhale. How would life be different? What would you do differently if you understood that perhaps right now is your only opportunity for a fulfilled life? How would goals, dreams, aspirations hold up and how would you go about them?

I pondered this earlier as I held my child. I noticed how my touch changed as I brought myself to the moment, from a very relaxed and barely present embrace to an embodied holding, all senses present to the experience which felt more than skin deep. I was in communion with him, with his skin, scent and warmth, with sensations and senses both physical and subtle, both comfortable and uncomfortable. I felt a sense of totality, meaning the moment felt complete and I felt complete in the moment and there was no difference between me and the moment, all was, and I was with it. The experience evolved into an expanded sense of peace, at once empty and full, into a silent invitation, a welcoming of the sacred as presence and awareness.

What if we lived soaked in the living essence of presence giving ample passage to a sense of minute by minute completion? What would we cling to then? And what does it mean to cling or to let go? What is the lack within ourselves that gives rise to this occurrence? Surely, there must be a root cause, my hypnotherapist mind assures me, yet is there? Is there a space where the experience of clinging and letting go meet and then dissolve, giving way to a different reality? A change in paradigm perhaps? What would that look like if we dared go that far as individuals, as parents, and then collectively?

It is active practice, as all my teachers say, and for me, practice brings me to a state of remembering. Every day and every moment is an opportunity to touch and deepen in the direction of presence. Every moment invites us to a deeper opening, a wider expansion and a more embodied realization of who we really are and what this life is for. Sometimes the practice is very simple, as simple as embracing my boy.

Let us practice presence everyday and at every moment.
